Project Narrative
The renovation of the Zashin & Rich law offices challenges the conventions of the traditional legal workplace by drawing inspiration from the ethos of punk rock: direct, unapologetic, collaborative, and rooted in cultural identity. Located in downtown Cleveland, the project reimagines approximately 20,000 square feet of office space as an environment that values openness, authenticity, and collective energy over hierarchy and formality.

Rather than reinforcing the closed-door culture typical of law firms, the design embraces transparency and shared experience. Private offices are minimized in favor of open work areas and communal spaces that encourage conversation, collaboration, and visibility across the firm. This spatial strategy reflects punk rock’s rejection of rigid structures and its emphasis on participation, where the line between performer and audience dissolves.

Cleveland’s legacy as a center of rock and roll culture informs the project at every scale. References to punk album graphics and underground music venues are embedded in the material palette and visual language, not as decoration, but as a framework for expressing identity. Neon accents, bold color moments, and graphic interventions recall the raw immediacy of music culture, while maintaining a disciplined architectural restraint appropriate for a professional setting.
Material choices reinforce this attitude of controlled defiance. Burned wood surfaces introduce texture and grit, evoking the patina of performance spaces and industrial backdrops. Exposed systems and robust finishes prioritize honesty over polish, aligning with punk’s DIY sensibility while supporting durability and longevity. Acoustic strategies balance openness with confidentiality, allowing the space to remain active and energetic without sacrificing focus.

Client-facing areas are conceived as social spaces rather than formal reception rooms, blurring the boundary between work and gathering. Conference rooms and collaboration zones function like rehearsal spaces—flexible, adaptable, and designed to support collective problem solving. Throughout the office, curated art and photography referencing Cleveland’s music history connect daily professional practice to the broader cultural fabric of the city.

Ultimately, the Zashin & Rich renovation is an assertion that professionalism does not require conformity. By channeling the spirit of punk rock, the project creates a workplace that is confident, expressive, and deeply rooted in place—one that reflects a firm willing to question tradition, embrace collaboration, and define success on its own terms.
